Inspire and Empower: Gratitude by AlexanderPaupoff, journal
Inspire and Empower: Gratitude
In my final year of high-school, a teacher I greatly admired made a comment that seemingly came out of nowhere and took deep root in my mind. She remarked on her dislike for the word 'gratitude', explaining that it was "a terrible burden to feel indebted". That stuck with me for many, many years. Mostly because I accepted that opinion without question, and even went so far as to try and adopt it. I failed miserably. It took some time to learn to think for myself when it came to people I look up to and admire, as it probably does for most people. As I grew older, met more people, and spent some time in reflection, I realised I didn't agree with my teacher's beliefs about gratitude. It wasn't something burdensome to me because I didn't view it as being detached from thankfulness, or as something owed. Instead, I viewed it as an extension of thankfulness, a culmination of thankfulness. Whereas I can express my thanks to you in words, I can show you my gratitude in acts... of resilience
Inspire and Empower: Self-Care by AlexanderPaupoff, journal
Inspire and Empower: Self-Care
Most of us are generally accepting of others and the fact that they're different from us - as we should be. But there's one person we find incredibly hard to accept as they are, one person we're unduly cruel towards. Quite unfortunately, it's the one person who has been, is, and always will be with us. It's a sad fact that we go to great lengths to distance ourselves from that person as we try to be more readily acceptable to others in general. Who is this unwavering companion always by our side, despite all our cruelty? Well, it's our very own self. Imagine going on a trip with your closest friend and they refuse to speak to you throughout? It's a lot like that, really, when you turn away from your self and sentence it to a life of denial. You abandon not only your self but everything that worked so hard to come together in precisely the way it did - all the days, all the experiences, all the people, and all the love - to make you, you. Today, on 24/7, we celebrate Self-Care Day
Inspire and Empower: Mindfulness by AlexanderPaupoff, journal
Inspire and Empower: Mindfulness
Who am I? If you’ve wondered that at some point – you’re not alone. It’s a question that’s as common as it's profound. More importantly, though, it’s fundamental. As we make our way through life, we’re not just looking for connection and meaning. We’re also seeking the essence of who we are. Undoubtedly, that search is often diluted by the constant stimuli of a fast-paced world, clamouring for our attention. Welcome to the second feature in our series devoted to mental health awareness and the journey of self-care. This week, we’re building on our foundation of resilience with a step into the realm of mindfulness. Mindfulness isn’t some lofty idea reserved only for gurus and mystics. It’s actually a practice accessible to every one of us. It’s a deliberate act of grounding ourselves in the present moment by nurturing a stillness in which we can be aware of our thoughts and feelings. By honing this practice – developing it like a habit or a muscle – we acquire a unique clarity of
